In Search Of Mixed Media / WOYWW 274

WOYWW?  Huh?  If you're wondering what that means, it's a fun little thing we do each Wednesday courtesy of Julia at Stamping Ground.  It's fun to run around the internet world and have a look-see at what everyone has cooking on their creative desks.  Be sure you check it out!

Here's how my craft table looks this morning.  This is pretty much exactly how I left it last night after creating a card for Heather Kraafter.  Silly me, I didn't even take a picture of it before I put it in the mail this morning.  You'll just have to take my word for it that it was cute!

That little stack of birthday cards you see laying there are getting ready to be sent to my mother.  She lives in Yuma, AZ, and she and her friends are well known for remembering each others' birthdays.  They go around their park in their golf carts (or walking) and leave cards and sometimes little gifts or flowers on the birthday person's front step.  It kind of reminds me of May Day when I was a kid and we'd make paper cones with flowers in them and leave them at the door of our neighbors.  But I digress.....  Mom asked me to send her an assortment of birthday cards for her friends.  I have a stack of ten ready for her, but some are blank on the inside so I'm getting ready to stamp a greeting in them before mailing them off to Arizona.  It gives me a perfect excuse to create more cards since I'm depleting my stash!!  Oh darn!

Now about that blog title -- In Search of Mixed Media.  What is mixed media?  Well, from what I've been told, it's very simply the process of creating something with a combination of different mediums.  I don't think of myself as a mixed media person, but with that definition in mind, sometimes I guess I am.  There are times in my card making where I'll use various markers (Copics and others), water color (either with ink or pencils), chalks, embossing and more.  So I guess that counts, right??  I think I need to embrace this mixed media concept more.

What's your take on mixed media?  How would you define it?  Share your thoughts in the comments below!

Thanks for looking at my blog. I appreciate all the wonderful comments everyone leaves. Happy Crafting!

  1. Hello Sheri. What lovely cards ready to be sent off. And what a great idea your mum and her friends have. I've got a super picture in my mind of all these little folk dashing around on their golf buggies.... Do you think they will need to erect zebra crossings and traffic lights at the centre??
I like your take on mixed media - I'll go with that - whatever the phrase means!
    Take care. God bless.

  2. I have a problem with mixed media as well. Just the phrase causes a somewhat negative - "mixed media - I can't do that!" - reaction. I also would say I have done it in the past but don't think of it as such. Then I think of all the things that all the artists have that I don't have and it makes me think I can't do it. I am having fun with our #ksdsept though!

    1. I know exactly what you mean. My goal today is to wrap my head around the concept so I can participate in #ksdsept as well!

  5. I love the question you pose. One of the reasons for the challenge this month was to really open our minds to what we do, don't do and WHY! I think your discussion here is just that - turns out I DO MIXED MEDIA but I would have never thought of it that way!
When we stop limiting our creativity, our processes, our supplies, we find we are ALL artists and we ALL are talented in creating what we love.

Thanks for thinking on the challenge and I saw your Instagram pic - so you are ON YOUR WAY! #KSDSept is all about "going for it!"

Your mom and her friends, they inspire me to want to do this is my own neighborhood. Could you imagine me walking down the street with a little red wagon full of goodies to leave for folks on their door? Hmmm, I just might!

    1. Heather, I would pay for a video of you canvasing your neighborhood with your red wagon doing "drive bys" of your neighbors!

I will say that once I was able to put in my mind that yes, I am a mixed media artist at times, I kept wanting to add and add and add to the piece I'm working on. You may have created a monster!

      Thanks for stopping by.

  7. I'm with Margaret with the picture in the head of the oldies racing around in their buggies delivering cards and gifts, but my vision has them wearing black ninja clothes so they don't get caught. LOL It all reminds me of when I was little we would always sneak around to Nanna's and leave her a small bunch of violets and a card on the door step. This has got to be the best post this week hands down, thanks for that. Enjoy your week.

  10. Hi Sheri, I think Mixed Media is many things to many people however, I have taught both Fine Art and Textiles which were for sometime considered completely seperate until artists in the 20th Century started to combine some of the techniques, to produces soft sculptures and collages. The artists began mixing things up a bit which they would not have done before. I think this led to artists and craftspeople looking at what else they could use in their projects so for me mixed media is about combining different materials which are not normally thought of as being used together e.g. sewing into card, using paint on fabrics, adding found objects to canvases, but this is just my interpretation.
